Coming soon: Transgender Olympics!
To start today’s letter, let’s just confirm, for the record, that we have no issues when it comes to gender, or your choice of partners. To our minds, you can be what you want, do what you want, sleep with who you want. Nobody’s business.
We do, however, reserve the right to inform our readership when these issues have a bearing on sports, and to comment on them, though we’d generally keep things tongue in cheek. We’ll also be guided by your input. If you agree, or disagree with what is written in our newsletters, please send us your views!
So, US President Joe Biden has appointed Pennsylvania Health Secretary Rachel Levine (photo) to be his assistant secretary of health. She’ll become the first openly transgender federal official to be confirmed by the US Senate.
If the Biden gender policy is to be adopted in anticipation of the regulations that are no doubt on the way, what would this mean for girls’ and women’s sports?
“Finished. Done,” Olympic track-and-field coach Linda Blade told the influential Wall Street Journal. “The leadership skills, all the benefits society gets from letting girls have their protected category so that competition can be fair, all the advances of women’s rights—that’s going to be diminished.”
WSJ adds: “In contests of strength and speed, the athletic chasm between the sexes, which opens at puberty, is both permanent and unbridgeable. Once male puberty is complete, testosterone suppression doesn’t undo the biological advantages men possess: larger hearts, lungs and bones, greater bone density, more-oxygenated blood, more fast-twitch muscle fibre and vastly greater muscle mass.
“It should be no surprise, then, that the two trans-identified biological males permitted to compete in Connecticut state track finals against girls—neither of whom was a top sprinter as a boy—consistently claimed top spots competing as girls. They eliminated girls from advancement to regional championships, scouting and scholarship opportunities and trophies, and they set records no girl may ever equal.
“It isn’t merely the trophies and scholarships and opportunities at stake. It isn’t even all the benefits sports have so long provided to young women—in self-esteem and health and camaraderie with friends. It isn’t merely that girls who participate in sports tend to earn better grades, that so many female Fortune 500 executives were athletes, or that sports force teen girls out of their own heads, where they might otherwise sit and stew to their detriment.
“Women’s rights will turn out to be cheap and up for grabs. Who will voice objection?”
We’re not going to define all the genders and half-genders and cross-genders and trans-genders that are recognised today, there are already 64 terms that describe gender identity and expression.
Suffice to say that, we’ll soon be seeing more individuals from among the 64 groups lining up in sports events – they’ll be identifying with either male or female groups and we can prepare for some tricky, exciting betting opportunities.
It’s not inconceivable, either, that we’ll see, not far into the future, a Trans-Gender Olympics, in which Biden’s Health Secretary will certainly be a major contender in events like Shot-Put or Weight-Lifting. There are bookies who will lay you odds on Mr/Ms Levine bagging that contest if you ask nicely. See next item!
Sportsbet, Australia, has launched a market for the ‘next thing Novak Djokovic will demand’ in a hilarious response to the World No. 1’s controversial list of hotel quarantine requests.
Along with the likes of Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams, Djokovic is serving his 14-day quarantine in a luxury apartment in Adelaide, and is allowed to train for five hours a day.
DJOKOVIC: Not Taking Any Prisoners..
Djokovic copped backlash from the public and fellow player Nick Kyrgios for sending a list of suggestions to Tennis Australia, asking for restrictions on athletes to be eased.
The requests included better food, reduced days spent in isolation, permission to visit coaches, and private houses with tennis courts for training.
Sportsbet has now opened up bets for what the 33-year-old Serb’s next demand will be.
Djokovic requesting karaoke and smoke machines be put in all player’s rooms had the best odds, coming in at $18.
South Africa’s Advertising Regulatory Board (ARB) has asked for the removal of an advertisement for Windhoek Beer on the basis that it entrenches toxic masculinity in suggesting that “real men drink real beer”.
The advertisement, which features actor Gerard Butler, opens in a bar, initially feeling like many traditional beer commercials. However, the mood changes when a character called Joe asks the waiter for a piece of lime to add to his beer.
Joe “is a gentle looking, red-headed man – two characteristics that might typically make him a target for teasing in a toxic environment”.
Gerard Butler is seated at the bar and says, ‘Hey! That’s a Windhoek. That’s 100% pure beer. You don’t need any lime. See for yourself.’
One person, Aadila Agjee, lodged a complaint against Heineken South Africa on its marketing of Windhoek Lager. Agjee says the commercial is offensive in that “It belittles a man for requesting a lime slice with his beer.”
GERARD BUTLER: Real men don’t eat quiche, but they do drink beer!
The complaint states as follows, “While this may seem funny to many, an equal or larger number of people enjoy citrus with their beer or cider – popularly linked with women having a lime or lemon slice with their cider. I understand the message that Windhoek beer is complete on its own, however, shaming or belittling people for their personal preferences is not ok.”
“Gender stereotyping or negative gender portrayal must not be permitted in advertising, unless in the opinion of the ARB, such stereotyping or portrayal is reasonable and justifiable in an open and democratic society based on human dignity, equality and freedom,” stated the ARB.
Heineken was instructed to withdraw or amend the commercial.
