Purton, Hewitson injured in shocking fall
A shocking fall has marred the prestigious Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin with a number of jockeys coming down on the turn in awful scenes.
Rank outsider Amazing Star broke down on the turn, with a number of horses behind him caught up in the chaos.
Australian superstar Zac Purton jockey (Lucky Patch) is among the jockeys affected along with South African Lyle Hewitson (Amazing Star), Karis Teetan (Naboo Attack) and Yuichi Fukunaga (Pixie Knight). The other runner to be badly affected was the Yuga Kawada mount Danon Smash which all but fell and finished 70 lengths from the winner.
Purton was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the meeting, after winning the first three races on the card along with Hewitson and Fukunaga.
Hong Kong Jockey Club commentators reported all jockeys were put into ambulances to be checked for injuries while trainer David Ferraris, who ran onto the track to help the jockeys reported Hewitson was conscious after copping the worst of the fall.
“Lyle was conscious, I spoke to him, he was strapped to a stretcher and he answered me,” Ferrraris said.
Jockey Blake Shinn went on to win the race aboard the Caspar Fownes-trained Sky Field, who beat home Christophe Soumillion on Resistencia and Joao Moreira on Courier Wonder.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club, soon after the fall, issued a statement confirming that jockeys Yuichi Fukunaga, Lyle Hewitson and Zac Purton were all conscious and had been taken to hospital for further medical assessment. – Extracts from Racenet.
